The most common shape is flat and rectangular but there are variants of square and horizontal designs for those with different preferences. They are very visible and as a result, for houses with this type of roofing, roof shingles make up an important part of the exterior of your home. Asphalt shingles have become a popular choice for many mainly because they offer weather resistance, versatility for different types of roof forms, and simplicity in installation. They are also very cost-effective. Even with all the benefits that asphalt shingles may have, over time, quite a number of problems may develop mostly due to aging. One of these problems may be leaking thus it is important to help the asphalt shingles retain their waterproof protection.

Liquid Roofing

Liquid roofing is a method that can be used to waterproof a roof. It is usually done by applying a special liquid roof coating onto the roof. The best part about liquid roofing is that it can be used for most if not all types of roofs. These types include flat, pitched, and even domed.

This method of waterproofing entails the application of a monolithic coating that is fully bonded and liquid-based. It works because the coating that is formed is rubber-like and takes the form of an elastomeric waterproof membrane. The membrane is also fully adhered, seamless and self-flashing.  This method shows numerous benefits like cost-effectiveness. Liquid roofing can deliver about 25 years of performance and can be used for either new or existing roofs. It is also very safe and easy to install because it does not involve hot works

There are a number of liquid applied roofing systems and each of them has its own specified applications and conditions for use. They are a great advantage because they eliminate the need for installing recover boards or tear-offs.

Application

Liquid roofing has been seen to be a solution to many types of roofing systems and these include asphalt shingles. The type of liquid roofing advisable for the asphalt shingles is Elastomeric Acrylic roof coating that has proven to provide durability. This method of waterproofing is simple and requires equipment that can easily be found in your home.

The equipment to be used include acrylic asphalt sealant, pump sprayer, water, bleach, garden hose, paint roller, and a plastic push brush. These will help you successfully add a protective layer to the shingles.

Method

Add to the pump sprayer, 3 parts of water and 1 part of the bleach. If you may have any plants around your home, spraying them with plain water using the garden hose will help in protecting them. Then spray the roof with water to make it nicely damp following this with spraying the bleach solution onto the shingles as evenly as possible. Allow the solutions to sit for about 15 minutes to allow the breaking up of mold, oil, and grease. Scrub the shingles with the brush. Rinse with clean water and allow it to dry. Stir the asphalt sealant and place it into a pump sprayer. It should then be sprayed evenly onto the shingles. Gently roll the sealant with a paint roller into the shingles and let it dry before applying a second layer.

Asphalt shingles are therefore a very common way of roofing houses especially those that are slightly pitched. Due to aging, it is important to help your roof retain its ability to resist leaking and therefore liquid roofing has proven to be a good choice. This is because of the methods of application and the effectiveness.
