What Is Slate Roofing?

Natural slate is the pinnacle of tile roofing materials. Like other types of tile, they are naturally waterproof and fireproof, but because they are composed of sedimentary rock from volcanic ash and clay, their durability is unmatched. Depending on the quarry they are sourced from and the hardness of that particular rock, a natural slate tile roof can last anywhere from 50 to 200 years. Similar to other naturally sourced materials like cedar shake, no two slate roofs are the same. Their one-of-a-kind texture can add a unique and visually striking appearance to your home’s exterior.

Why Choose Slate as a Roofing Material?

Slate is a fine-grained crystalline rock metamorphosed from bedded deposits of clay, silt, and different minerals. Its unique composition gives it several unusual characteristics as well as a wide range of variations in color and texture — features that make it an excellent choice for roofing applications.

Slate quarried for roofing stock is very dense and exceedingly durable. It can last for a century or longer due to its high strength, low porosity, and low absorption rate. Compared to alternatives such as asphalt and wood, slate shingles are known as one of the highest-quality, longest-lasting roofing materials available. The many different colors, sizes, and textures of slate afford many architectural effects, contributing to the appearance and beauty of any building.

Slate Roof Repair

As a preferred roofing contractor, we understand that slate is durable, attractive, and also slightly more expensive than shingles and metal roofs. However, a benefit to consider is the fact that a leak in your slate roof can be fixed without the need for a full roof replacement. We offer slate roof repair for all our New Jersey customers, and we’ll do everything we can to reclaim the slates that are in good condition and only replace the ones that can’t be reused.

Our slate roof repair process is comprehensive and starts with a thorough evaluation of the problem. We check for missing and damaged slates and identify if the flashing and valleys are in good shape and whether the roof can simply be repaired. Once we identify the situation, we provide you with estimates of work with price and warranty details.

Before we begin repairs, we’ll install a special setup that prevents us from walking directly on slates. We replace the missing or broken slates by removing the old nails using a special tool called a slate ripper. We then remove all pieces of broken slate, install a slate hook, and hang a new slate. Sometimes we may also need to change the flashing or valley, but if so we make every effort to reuse the existing slates.
